YouTube, the world’s most popular
video-sharing platform, is a digital behemoth that has revolutionized content
consumption. Let’s delve into its vastness and explore how it compensates
creators.
The
platform hosts an extensive library of content, including music videos,
tutorials, vlogs, gaming streams, and more.
YouTube Royalties for Creators
Yes,
YouTube pays royalties to musicians and content
creators across various categories.
The royalty
system can be intricate due to three primary groups:
YouTube Music: A premium service separate from
standard YouTube.
Official Channels: Where musicians post their
music videos.
Content ID: YouTube’s automated system for
copyright owners to identify videos using their content.
How Royalties Work on YouTube
Performance Royalties:
These
come from broadcasts of your music. When your song plays in a
video, you earn performance royalties.
YouTube
pays based on views. The more views, the more royalties you
receive.
Mechanical Royalties:
These
stem from interactive streaming of your song.
When
viewers listen to your music on YouTube, you earn mechanical royalties.
Monetization:
To earn
revenue, you must monetize your content by signing up for Content
ID.
YouTube
places ads (or banner ads) on your videos. If viewers engage with these
ads (watching more than 30 seconds or clicking), you share the revenue:
YouTube (45%) and you (55%).
YouTube Music and Regular YouTube
YouTube
Music: Pays royalties directly for music.
Regular
YouTube: You earn royalties after content
monetization (ads on your videos).
In the Description, add a
list of timestamps and titles.
Make sure that the first timestamp you list starts with 00:00.
Your video should have at least three timestamps listed in ascending
order.
The minimum length for video chapters is 10 seconds.
5. Click SAVE.
Note: this option will
override automatic video chapters.
Supported subtitle and closed caption files
A subtitle or closed caption
file contains the text of what is said in the video. It also
contains time codes for when each line of text should be displayed.
Some files also include position and style info, which is especially
useful for deaf or hard of hearing viewers. See what file formats
YouTube supports below.
If you’re new to creating caption files, you may want to use SubRip
(.srt) or SubViewer (.sbv). They only require basic timing info, and
can be edited using any plain text editing
software.
The main difference between SubRip and SubViewer files is the format
of the caption start and stop times. Here are examples of both
formats:
The SubRip file format is described on the Matroska multimedia container
format website as "perhaps the most basic of all subtitle formats."[17] SubRip
(SubRip Text) files are named with the extension.srt,
and contain formatted lines of plain text in groups separated by a blank line.
Subtitles are numbered sequentially, starting at 1. The timecode format
used is hours:minutes:seconds, milliseconds with time units fixed to two
zero-padded digits and fractions fixed to three zero-padded digits
(00:00:00,000). The fractional
separator used is the comma,
since the program was written in France.

Increase your video length limit. By default, you can
upload videos that are up to 15 minutes long. Verified accounts can upload
videos longer than 15 minutes.
Follow the steps to verify your Google Account. You can choose to get a
verification code through a text message on a mobile device or an automated
voice call. Make sure you're using an up-to-date version of your browser to
upload files greater than 20 GB.
Maximum upload size: The maximum file size you can
upload is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. We've changed the limits on
uploads in the past, so you may see older videos that are longer than 12 hours.
Use automatic captioning: Captions are a great way
to make content accessible for viewers. YouTube can use speech recognition
technology to automatically create captions for your videos. Note: These
automatic captions are generated by machine learning algorithms, so the quality
of the captions may vary.
We encourage creators to add professional captions first. YouTube is
constantly improving its speech recognition technology. However, automatic
captions might misrepresent the spoken content due to mispronunciations,
accents, dialects, or background noise. You should always review automatic
captions and edit any parts that haven't been properly transcribed.
Automatic captions on long-form videos and Shorts.
Automatic captions are available in Dutch, English, French, German, Indonesian,
Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, and
Vietnamese. We encourage creators to add professional captions first. If
automatic captions are available, they'll automatically be published on the
video. Automatic captions may not be ready at the time that you upload a video.
Processing time depends on the complexity of the video's audio.
YouTube is constantly improving its speech recognition technology. But
automatic captions might misrepresent the spoken content due to
mispronunciations, accents, dialects, or background noise. Always review
automatic captions and edit any parts that haven't been properly transcribed.
Here's how you can review automatic captions and make changes, if needed:
Sign in to YouTube Studio. From the left menu, select Subtitles. Click the
video you want to add captions or subtitles to. Under “Subtitles”, click More
next to the subtitles you want to edit. Review automatic captions and edit or
remove any parts that haven't been properly transcribed. Troubleshoot automatic
captions issues. If your video doesn't generate
automatic captions, it could be due to one or more of the following reasons:
The captions aren't available yet due to processing complex audio in the
video. Automatic captions don't support the language in the video. The video is
too long. The video has poor sound quality or YouTube doesn't recognize the
speech. There’s a long period of silence at the beginning of the video. There
are multiple speakers whose speech overlaps.

Important: If your
website or app is child directed and you embed YouTube content,
you must self designate your site or app using these
tools. This self designation will ensure Google does not
serve personalized ads on these sites or apps and some features
will be disabled in the embedded player.
